#Videocrux - Brother Francklin helping Haiti's neediest Brother Francklin helping Haiti's neediest
Decades of poverty, environmental degradation, violence, instability and dictatorship have left Haiti one of the poorest nations in the world. But one man, Brother Francklin, has been fighting for over 30 years to give some hope to the island’s poorest.
Brother Francklin helping locals with foreign donations
Today is fishing day and the catch is good. Pondiassou is about five hours from Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. It’s here that Brother Francklin with the help of foreign donations chose to create about 100 artificial lakes. The aim? To help local fishermen and farmers.
Francklin providing shelters for Haiti's street children
The water in these lakes allows more than half a million people to irrigate their fields. And it’s also for domestic use. Only eight percent of homes here have running water. But Brother Francklin doesn’t stop there. He also does what he can for Haiti’s many street children; thanks to his efforts, three shelters help keep around a thousand kids off the streets.
Haiti ranked the poorest in the western hemisphere
It’s just a time bomb leaving children to grow up like that at the mercy of armed gangs, at the mercy of criminal gangs. For me, that’s dangerous for the country. A country that’s ranked the poorest in the western hemisphere. Brother Francklin’s projects alone won’t change that but they do bring some hope to the island’s neediest people.
