Chinese director Zhao Lang is presenting his new film "Petition- The court of the complainants" out of competition at Cannes. Since 1996 he has been filming "petitioners", people who come to Beijing from across China to lodge formal complaints about the abuses they have endured at the hands of local authorities.

Complainants are people from the lowest class in China, the less cultured, but they have an extraordinary determination and faith. China is a society where everything is about relations, and these people are precisely those without relations to obtain anything.

Of course these stories of complainants are very sensitive in China right now and I had pressure on my shoulders doing the filming, but I didn't want to take it into account at any point.
