#Videocrux - Dr. Laurent Lantieri on the procedure
World's first simultaneous transplants A patient in France received the world's first simultaneous transplants of a new face and both hands including the wrists, the hospital where the surgery took place announced Monday. The recipient of the transplants is a 30-year-old man who was severely burned in a 2004 accident, said a spokesperson for the Henri Mondor Hospital in Creteil, a suburb southeast of Paris. Laurent Lantieri, "We are talking about a patient who has been followed for several years after suffering severe burns in 2004. So all his fingers and the base of his hands were amputated and he had burns over practically all of his face. His eyelashes were completely destroyed; his scalp and ears were totally destroyed. So, we replaced these with a graft. There was no other solution."
