Former belongings of Stalin and Hitler put up in a museum in Russia. Plans to blow up the Bolshoi theatre should Nazis occupy Moscow, the former belongings of Stalin and Hitler- these are parts of a new exhibition charting 90 years of military successes and counterespionage. Orthopaedic ankle braces once worn by Goebbels, a glass holder used by Stalin and even one of Hitler’s coats recovered by the Red Army at the end of the war – all brought together under one roof in Moscow. Artiom Savinov, Researcher at Moscow’s Central Museum of the Armed Forces, “Hitler’s jacket was found in the chancellery building of the Reich during the fall of Berlin at the end of April 1945. You can see the burn marks here around the collar; that’s because the building was on fire." Going right back to Tsarist times, the exhibition charts a century of military successes and counterespionage. Artiom Savinov, Researcher at Moscow’s Central Museum of the Armed Forces, “The mission of the counterespionage services was to prevent foreign spies uncovering our military secrets, to denounce enemy agents acting in our army and to fight against sabotage attempts."And even some of the inner workings of the KGB are revealed. One plan was to blow up the Bolshoi Theatre and other prized buildings if Moscow were captured by the Nazis. Ivan Ermonov, Visitor, “In previous times, like in Soviet times, we did not know this list because, of course, it was secret and now it's open, it's quite unusual and you can see how people were protecting their city." Back then in Communist times we didn’t know that this list of buildings to be blown up existed. Now it’s there for everyone to see." But the exhibition noticeably only touches on the Soviet Afghanistan campaign and the Chechnyan wars in the 90s. Don't expect anything too enlightening. Some complexes seen are jet ready to filed as museum pieces.
