Lebanon is often presented as the exception in the Middle East- liberal, multi-confessional, with a booming nightlife and expansive cultural offerings. But for gays and lesbians, it seems it’s still risky to display their sexual preference. Beirut, a bastion of sexual tolerance in the Arab world. But, even here, coming out of the closet can mean walking into danger.
People beaten up for being gay by police officers.
Several weeks ago, two men were beaten up. These demonstrators say they were attacked by police, then jailed for being gay. Alexandre, demonstrator, “It wasn't just the police who clobbered the two homosexuals. People gathered to watch and no- one intervened. It's very serious. I denounce it. It's very serious. It's particularly serious because they were police officers.”
Holding guns permitted rather than holding hands.
Sam, demonstrator, “It's really something common where you find men holding guns and everybody's more accepting of that than to see two guys holding hands you know, being in love. So it's of what I understand in that situation is that it's more permissible to hate each other and kill each other than to love each other .”
