The bay of Han in Senegal used to be one of the world's most beautiful spots, but now it's known as "the bay of trash".' The government has decided to tackle the problem head-on and is to undertake the countries biggest ever clean-up operation. At first glance the bay of Han is a piece of paradise. But look closer and you can see why it's been nicknamed "the bay of trash."The murky water is due in part to local slaughterhouses. Mabcke Seck, anti-pollution activist, "It can be red early in the morning, yellow around 11am-midday, and very dark when they are cleaning the rooms and halls. Animal guts go straight into the water so many vultures and birds gather nearby. We have to block our noses because, to put it simply, it smells bad." It's not just the smell that's bothering residents. They live in an area home to 80 percent of the country's industrial activity and experts say the effect on their health is alarming. Many suffer from breathing difficulties, skin allergies and diarrhea. But help is at hand. Thanks to European loans Senegal is to undertake the biggest clean-up operation the country has ever known. Babacar Ndiaye, engineer for ONAS, “The plan that has been put forward is to put a canal along the beach so as to collect waste water, both industrial and domestic, that goes straight onto the beach. That water will go to a purification centre and once it's clean it'll be put in the sea." Work is due to start in 2011 and companies who don't cooperate will be taxed more. Authorities are hoping locals will do their bit too and take their future into their own hands.
