President Barack Obama on Friday declared the US economy was "in a much better place" than a year ago as growth figures for the first three months of the year spurred hopes of a solid recovery.
3.2% economy growth rate in first quarter of the year
Today we learned that in the first quarter of this year our economy grew at a rate of 3.2 percent. What this number means is that our economy as a whole is in a much better place than it was one year ago. SOT Obama (English, 22 sec): We've still got a long way to go on our road to recovery. There are going to be more ups and downs along the way. But today’s news is another sign that we’re on the right track. And we’re going to keep doing everything we can to help our businesses take the baton and power our recovery today and lead us to more hopeful and more prosperous set of days in the future.
Obama talks about the strategies to protect shorelines
Obama, “As I said yesterday, BP is ultimately responsible under the law for paying the costs of response and cleanup operations, but we are fully prepared to meet our responsibilities to any and all affected communities. And that’s why we’ve been working closely with state and local authorities since the day of the explosion. There are now five staging areas to protect sensitive shorelines; approximately 1,900 federal response personnel are in the area; and more than 300 response vessels and aircraft on the scene 24/7. We've also laid approximately 217,000 feet of protective boom, and there are more on the way”.
