It’s a curious sight amidst Delhi’s slums, but the Chalta Firta, or mobile school bus, is on a serious mission. Armed with blackboards and chalk, teachers are trying to bring basic literacy and numeracy to impoverished children
Classrooms for the impoverished
Many here have never seen a classroom, but the Indian government wants to change that. They are trying to bring universal education to children under 14 by next year, children like Suman Munah Lal.She used to work as a domestic helper to support her family. Since attending Chalta Firta, she has left her job and enrolled in a nearby school.
Young Dreams
“I have this big dream to bring pride to my family name. My dream is to study and become something. I want to stand on my own feet.”The aim is to ultimately send marginalised boys and girls to a formal school.The bus itself can spend only two hours a day at each slum, barely enough for a comprehensive education
Convincing parents to educate kids
But it’s not always easy convincing parents, especially when their children are earning a wage.
