#Videocrux - As election looms, French politicians head to farm fair
As election looms, French politicians head to farm fair It’s a tradition that French leaders rarely shirk, especially during election time. A visit to the annual agricultural fair in Paris is an obligatory stop -- and photo op -- and on Wednesday, an array of politicians, from socialist Martine Aubry to far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen and former prime minister Dominique de Villepin have been putting in appearances.
Villepin stresses on importance of farming Dominique de Villepin, Former French Prime Minister says "I hope that France will give all due weight to the question of farming, which concerns the food security of everyone in France and elsewhere in Europe; it concerns France's and Europe's independence in that respect, and it's a matter of public interest. I think it's time this action was able to make a statement for all those in the rural or agricultural world who are fighting for the common good."
Farmers and French land share a unique bond Jean-Marie Le Pen, Leader, National Front says "We are here every year to show our support for this crucial activity of the French economy -- and one which goes beyond economy, because there is clearly a bond between farmers and the French land which you could call spiritual, special, affectionate."
Sarkozy's liberalism can't work in agriculture Martine Aubry, Leader, Socialist Party says "We need to say to the president, your liberalism cannot work, especially in agriculture. And we will fight with our socialist European friends to find new regulations which don't humiliate farmers through subsidies, but simply recognize their work through fair prices and contracts with distributors."
