Relief workers in Haiti have been struggling for the fifth day to assist desperate earthquake survivors amid anger over the chaotic aid effort, as aftershocks continued to shake the island. With fears growing of epidemics and other heath problems, many inhabitants have now decided to try to flee the disaster altogether.
Haitians head in search for new homes
They come from all corners of town, suitcase in hand. Every morning, at Gonaives station, around a hundred people gather here to wait for the first lorry heading either north or south.
$80 for heading to the north
On this north-bound lorry, it'll cost 80 dollars to leave the capital for the Haitian coast. The journey is rough, and takes some six or seven hours.
Haitians giving up their capital city
With the situation here showing little signs of improvement, the number of Haitians simply giving up on their capital city is growing with evey hour.
