#Videocrux - New York embraces California's unwanted Chihuahuas New York embraces California's unwanted Chihuahuas
New York is, like, totally awesome -- especially if you're a Chihuahua abandoned in California. Fifteen of these goggle-eyed living toys, best known for inhabiting the handbags of Paris Hilton and other Hollywood B-listers, became New Yorkers Wednesday after being rescued from the West coast.
Chihuahuas, new rage among dog-lovers
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Generally, the height ranges between six and ten inches. However, some dogs grow as tall as 12 to 15 inches (30 to 38 cm). Fifteen of these goggle-eyed living toys, best known for inhabiting the handbags of Paris Hilton and other Hollywood B-listers, became New Yorkers Wednesday after being rescued from the West coast. The evacuation was in response to what the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) calls the "massive overpopulation of Chihuahuas in California."
Huge demand of Chihuahuas for adoption
Diane Wilkerson, Director, ASPCA Volunteer Programs says "In New York City people love small dogs they are great in apartments and they're great to transport around so we started getting calls immediately about whether or not there would be enough Chihuahuas for everyone who wanted one."
Hundreds of people line up to adopt 11 puppies
More than 100 New Yorkers lined up in icy temperatures to get their chance. Some waited from 8:00 am to midday to be sure. A Chihuahua in a pet store can cost anything from 700 to 1,400 dollars, dog lovers in the queue said, so a free animal is a big attraction.
Agents help owners find perfect match
The ASPCA required would-be owners to answer an 18-point questionnaire on what they expected from a dog -- play with children, catch balls, guard the house, relax, and so on. Then prospective owners and dogs were brought together while staff watched for interaction -- or incompatibility.
