Diamonds shine at world's largest jewellery fair Hong Kong is hosting the world's largest jewellery fair -- and this year, diamonds are taking centre stage as Asian economies rebound after a difficult period.
Diamond merchants visit fair from around the globe Hong Kong's jewellery fair is an event with plenty of bling. With 3000 exhibitors, 400 of them diamond specialists, this is a big-budget affair attracting dealers from across the world. One of the major attraction at the fair is a sculpture by Taiwanese jewellery maker Cindy Chau, over 600 diamonds have been used including a sparking seven carat stone that sits at the centre of a detachable butterfly broche.The cost of this piece is over two million dollars
$5 billion worth of diamonds being displayed The total value of the many precious gems which are brought from across the world remains a closely guarded secret but it is rumoured the collective haul is worth in the region of 5 billion US dollars.
Diamond sale begins to shine in spite of recession Despite some rough times for the global economy diamond sales are beginning to shine once more.Shlomo Tidhar, consultant, Galaxy Diamonds saying "It's bizarre, like many luxury sectors, diamonds are one of the first to suffer in a downturn but it's also one of the first to recover".
Diamond industry shows immense potential The global economic downturn, coupled with concerns in recent years over the role diamonds play in fuelling conflict, have helped strip these sought-after precious stones of some of their allure. However, as the Hong Kong fair shows, for those that can afford them, this sector still has plenty of sparkle left.
